The first part of the driving test is the Theory and Hazard Perception test. You have to pass this before you can apply for the Practical Driving test.

It’s best to start studying straight away, even if your not planning on taking lessons for a few months.

Click below for more information on the Theory and Hazard Perception Test, and where to get CD roms for your computer.

When you take your driving test, the first thing you will be asked to do is read a number plate. You must be able to read a new style (AA 08 ABC) from 20 metres, or an old style (A 123 ABC) from 20.5 metres.

Next you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions. These will be questions like “tell me how you would check the brake lights” or “show me how you would check the headlights and tail lights”.

You will then go on a drive for around 45 minutes, where your general driving will be assessed by the examiner. They will also require you to perform two reversing exercises, for example, a turn in the road (three point turn), a reverse around a corner, or a reverse parking manoeuvre. You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.
